This garden is located in the Wellington Heights Neighborhood of Cedar Rapids. The main purpose of the garden is to bring together many different people in the community in order to bring unity. Together this neighborhood can do great things!! The garden (in particular the watermelon and pumpkins) LOVED the week of super hot weather here in Iowa. Due to the plants soaking up the heat they have practically EXPLODED all over the garden. The thick vines starting intermingling, intertwining, and sprawling all over.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">While that sounds pretty awesome the garden is thriving with life it quite frankly was getting detrimental to other plants in the garden. We couldn't see the peppers, had troubles finding the squash, the beans and peas were barely visible... it was bad. So, we did what anyone does when they are in deep and don't know what to do- call in backup!! Check out the photos below to see the "before"s and "after"s of the garden.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">By the way- a big, HUGE extra special THANK YOU to Lori, the Master Gardener, who came to our rescue to get the vines diverted in different directions and to help us find the other plants that were being swallowed up by "vine monster"!!
Things are continuing to grow in the garden and we are continuing to harvest produce. I won't lie- I'm running out of titles for the blog posts and am currently in a creative rut. So, until I come up with something else the blog titles will be something along the lines of, "All is well at the garden....." or "Growing, harvesting, growing, harvesting..." :)
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
A lot of the garden is growing rapidly. If you don't know much about gardens I can tell you this: There is seasonality in a garden. Some things grow and ripen in the early part of the season, some in the middle part, and some later in the season. Right now lettuce, spinach, and radish (we didn't plant radishes but we have the other two at our garden) are all "in season" and ripe and ready to be picked and eaten. Below is a picture of the ISU Extension and Outreach's Office Manager, Mary, enjoying a bag of fresh lettuce and spinach mix that was picked from the garden just on Thursday.
Green Iowa AmeriCorps members taught kids and their families all about composting! They could see how to use a compost bin made from pallets, a vermicompost bin with worms, and a tumbler. Kids decorated buckets to take home and save food scraps and other compostable items to put in the compost bin.

Some waste was also diverted from the picnic (watermelon rinds, leftover veggies, paper napkins/plates, etc.) and put into the compost bin on site. Hopefully by next year that compost will help the garden grow!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">YOU DIDN'T!!!! Due to the threat of stormy weather it got pushed back to Thursday June 13th (TODAY). The event is from 5:30-6:30pm at First Congregational Church. The church is putting on a FREE grill out and Green Corp members will be on hand to discuss composting. They will also be handing out free buckets so you can start helping the Gather and Grow Friendship Garden's compost corral by collecting compost from your house and dumping it in the corral by the garden. Eventually the compost will decompose and become awesome soil that will go into the garden and help it keep healthy. I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I am here to write a few updates and include some pictures. At the end of last week the city came and chopped down the two trees that had fallen (including the one that was dangerously close to the garden). Since then the fence has been repaired and the garden soaked up the wonderful weather last week and started to really take off and grow! (Look below for pictures on those two items)

I've had some questions about the art show- let me sum it up. IT WENT GREAT!!!! We made some good money and we had a lot of proud JSA kids show off their art work. Not to mention that we had some proud parents, church members, and community members buy some artwork. (Those pictures are also below).

So in the short of it, everything is going well. We'll keep an eye on the weather and see what all of this rain does to the garden.... who would have thought we'd be talking about flooding when we just were uttering the word "drought" a couple months ago!
Unfortunately there were tree limbs down all over town and even power knocked out to several places for long hours. At First Congregational Church where the Gather and Grow Friendship Garden is located had 2 major trees completed up rooted. The only damage done was one of the trees barely falling on the wire fence of the garden. Check out the photos below to see the whole scene- and to see how lucky we were that everything is ok!
PLANTED!!!!<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It was quite an exciting, beautiful spring day today in the Gather and Grow Friendship Garden!!! Today we were a United Way Day of Caring site and had approximately 10 volunteers from Target stores (both north and south sides). These volunteers did a fabulous job of putting down newspaper and mulching the garden, helped our Garden Enrichment students plant the garden, and even helped put siding on the garage where the garden tools are stored. They were incredibly hard workers and helped completely make over our garden space. Check out the photos below to see the progress!!!
Honestly, it takes a lot of people to make the garden happen! We were lucky enough to have 7 Marion High School students plus a teacher to come and help with a ton of loose ends for their One Day in May campaign. (The ENTIRE school goes to different sites and give back to the community for a whole day! HOW COOL IS THAT?!)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So on Monday May 13th the students came to First Congregational Church did several different things including: painting pickets for our fence, finishing some wind chimes for the art show, and even planting several different things in the garden!! Some of the things that were planted were transplants (meaning they were grown in Culver's green house from seeds and are already plants growing) and some were direct sow (which means putting the seeds in the ground). Check out the pictures below to see the garden sprouting up before our eyes!!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Also, don't get about the ART SHOW AND SALE this Friday from 5-7pm!!! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18042964616660089309noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4012040801902793023.post-58467802413248301312013-05-08T02:00:00.000-07:002013-05-08T02:00:08.869-07:00Art Show to Benefit the Garden<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Hello Everyone!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On Friday May 17th there is a very exciting event going on at First Congregational Church! From 5-7pm there will be an art show featuring work from Johnson School of the Arts that will be for sale!! Allow me to explain how it all works:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1) There is a minimum price on the art work. The most affordable artwork will be $5 with some ranging up to $20. All of the artwork is based on donations- so if you really like a piece you can certainly give more than the minimum amount. Purchases must be cash and paid on the spot.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">2) The artwork will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis. This means that once the artwork is purchased a "SOLD!" sign will be placed on it but left up so people can still admire the work. All of the artwork will be picked up at 7pm that same night.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">3) I bet you're wondering what is going to be sold at the art show. GOOD QUESTION! There will be several different types of art work- bugs that are made from up-cycling materials, photography prints that are matted and ready to be framed, clay pots that have been glazed by students, water color art work, up-cycled wind chimes, and even a couple wooden bar stools that have been painted by Super Snack Lady and her co-worker Amy.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">4) ALL of the donations and proceeds from the art show will go straight to the garden, educational programs, and other garden related events.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">5) This event is the same night as JSA's Blues and BBQ and we are hoping for wonderful weather. So between eating and catching some of the talent over at the school you should wander across the street, check out the garden, and purchase some artwork!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Check out some photos below for a very small preview of some of the items that will be at the art show. Get excited and we'll see you in a week and a half!!
What exactly does that mean? Below is a picture of the garden area staked out and spray painted before we dug it up and put compost on it. Kids affectionally call them "pie wedges" or "pizza slices"!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Can you see the yellow outline? Those are the "pie wedges"
that will make up the garden grow space! It's not a traditional
rectangle or square but will still have all of the
vegetables that you are used to seeing in a garden.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Scott does gardening education to schools in the Iowa City area and is currently helping over 25 schools from elementary to high schools get school gardens started or maintained. He was nice enough to generously donate his time and expertise to our project! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18042964616660089309noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4012040801902793023.post-55704693557335142952013-04-30T11:36:00.000-07:002013-04-30T11:36:00.720-07:00The start of something special!<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Way back in the cold winter months several people were dreaming up plans for a school garden at Johnson School of the Arts. The problem was that Johnson had no grass available for a garden due to a large playground and blacktop area.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Luckily, First Congregational Church was generous enough to let us use their property. From there different community groups started working together to make a garden possible.

Look below to see the space as it was over the winter and spring months!
