Garden Kick Off Party!

On Saturday April 6th we held a huge garden kick off party.  It involved a lot of activities for children and adults alike.  We were prepping the garden beds so that they would be ready for planting once the weather got warmer, we also heard from a local meteorologist and a local dietician, and there were crafts for families and kids to do.  Check out all of the fun photos below to see all of the action!

The "pie wedges" are pictured with the large
pile of compost.  The day after this photo
was taken Culver's came and tilled up
the wedges so we could prep them.

Lori (on the left) who is a Master Gardener
and Scott discuss their plan of
attack on how to spread the compost
on the morning of the Garden Kick Off
Party.

Here is Corey Christiansen, the chief
meteorologist at KGAN.  He talked about
draught concerns fro the summer
and how that could possibly
affect the garden.

Dietician Alicia Aguiar from Hy-Vee discussed
several different fruits and veggies with
the kids who attended the Garden Kick
Off event. When the kids tried a produce
item of a specific color then they got to get
that color sprayed in their hair!
(Don't worry, it washed out!)

While the kids got to do fun activities and crafts
inside the adults were hard at work outside!
In this photo they are spreading compost
around all of the different pie wedges.

Kids and families painted wooden pickets
that will be incorporated into the
garden fencing.  There were ones about
health, staying active, and ones that respresent
girl scout troops, the school, and other community
groups who are involved in our project!
