Neighborhood Picnic & Composting!

This week the garden was very busy!  We are excited that our seeds and transplants are growing so well. It's hard to wait until they are all ready to pick because they look so delicious!
These pole beans are growing rapidly and love twirling up the trellises.
I think they look beautiful.

The spinach and lettuce plants are doing well and some were ready to harvest this week.  We enjoyed some fresh-picked greens on our hamburgers at the neighborhood picnic on a beautiful day!

Families enjoyed great food, games, fresh air, and friends at the event.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps members taught kids and their families all about composting! They could see how to use a compost bin made from pallets, a vermicompost bin with worms, and a tumbler.  Kids decorated buckets to take home and save food scraps and other compostable items to put in the compost bin.

Some waste was also diverted from the picnic (watermelon rinds, leftover veggies, paper napkins/plates, etc.) and put into the compost bin on site.  Hopefully by next year that compost will help the garden grow!
